Ricky Gervais one of many at “Night Of Too Many Stars”

Although his career is not one of the many launched by Jon Stewart’s Daily Show, Ricky Gervais will be joining Stewart and several of his show cohorts (past and present) for the “Night Of Too Many Stars - An Overbooked Concert For Autism Education.”

Gervais is participating in the lineup that boasts comedic stars like Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, and Chris Rock, plus many more. They will be combining their comedy clout for the charity event to raise money for the New York Center for Autism, as well as other educational and support services in the country designed to assist children and adults with autism.

Gervais rags Mel Gibson, plugs movie as host of the Golden Globes

Viewers got a free show when Ricky Gervais hosted the Golden Globe awards on NBC last Sunday.

“I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man is Mel Gibson,” Gervais joked during the show.

Paul McCartney also got some ragging, “We were on the same plane to get here,” Gervais said of McCartney. “I was in first and he was behind me in coach. Well, he spent a lot of money last year.” McCartney and Heather Mills divorced last year, and while the audience groaned about the joke, Gervais told them, “I don’t think we have to feel too sorry for him. He’s doing all right.”

Gervais said that he was pleased to be able to get through the night, and that everyone took his jokes well, including Mel Gibson. Of course, that could be because he forewarned Gibson that he was going to be the butt of one of the night’s cruelest jokes.

Throughout the night, Gervais also plugged the DVD release of his latest movie “The Invention of Lying.” Apparently the ploy worked, Gervais said, because the DVD sold roughly 70,000 copies in a number of hours after the show.
